I am going to see Star Trek today and I do it with a great deal of anxiety. I love Star Trek and have grown up watching Gene Roddenberry’s world on TV and the movies. This new film is directed by J J Abrams from Lost fame, who claims to not be a Star Trek fan. He says he did not make the movie for the die hard Trek fans but instead for new people (meaning younger). This statement scares me and insults me and thousands of other people at the same time. How dare he say that. I want to like this film and the new young cast, but it will be difficult to put aside the old one. I will post a review when I get back and let you know. In the meantime Mr. Abrams who doesn’t think too much of longtime fans can be assured that Lost will not still have a following after 20 years and neither will he. Gene Roddenberry however will be remembered forever as the creator of Star Trek and that world will happily go on for decades to come, well beyond Abrams career.
05/07/09 update Spoiler alert…. Saw the film and liked it but hated the time twist plot excuse so they can make sequels thing. It is logical and I understand the why of it but they did not have to kill 2 characters, one of them Amanda spocks Mother who is a beloved in the Trek world, to prove their point. I look forward to the sequels and the new crew. Live long and prosper.
